Project Description
Built in the early 70s, the Skyreach Centre (formerly Edmonton Northlands Coliseum) was primarily used for hockey, although it did host a number of other events such as concerts, rodeos and exhibitions. At the time, the Skyreach met architectural standards but by the 1990's it needed extensive renovations to meet contemporary standards for a multi-purpose facility. Consequently, PCL-Maxam, a Joint Venture was contracted to fast-track this major overhaul which included the construction and finishing of 35 luxury suites, each complete with a washroom, bar, television and stereo. Additional upgrades to the Coliseum included new flooring, ceiling and wall finishes, concession areas and washrooms. New seating arrangements, stairways and accesses resulted in an exclusive club seating section that features a luxuriously finished concourse, as well as other amenities. The project was completed on a fast-tracked schedule which stipulated that much of the work was to be completed within a 7-week period to accommodate the season opening game. Crews worked two 10-hour shifts, 7 days per week, to make the critical time frames and managed to complete substantially more than the minimum requirements.
