Project Features/Highlights
Project Description
The Calgary Tower Observation Deck Extension involved the removal of approximately 35 lineal feet of exterior wall on the observation level, the installation of a structural steel skeleton which was suspended from the soffit structure and tied back into the existing steel columns at the floor level. The exterior vertical walls were finished with full height glass and the floor was finished using structural glass panels which extended the floor outward 4'6''. A swing stage to clean the new glass areas was incorporated into the project scope late in the planning stage. This increased the complexity of the overall project as structural design modifications were required for the system which was constantly evolving in design due to the unique requirement to be able to transfer the stage to the underside of the extension for cleaning and maintenance purposes. The site was located 525 feet above street level and overtop a glass roofed restaurant at the base of the tower, and is only the 4th such structural glass floor system in the world.
